Picked up a Hayward 2-speed super pump, 1.5 HP, 230V with integrated high/low speed toggle switch on the back. Wired it in today and plumbing mostly done. There is a sticker on the side indicating it has to be wired through a two-speed controller, which I do not have. The sticker not shown on photos on website where I purchased, and nothing about the need for a 2-speed timer in the manual . The reason I selected this pump specifically is that the toggle on the back controls the speed, rather than a controller. Basically I simply want it to turn on via the mechanical timer and run at low speed. When I need high speed to vacuum I can simply flip the toggle to high speed and back down when finished.
I realize 2-speed pumps with no toggle would require a 2-speed controller. I see no reason at all why a two speed controller is needed on a model with a toggle speed switch. The manual says to start the pump on high speed when priming or when pool is dirty, but says nothing about starting it on low speed otherwise. The sticker on the side of the motor is the only indication a standard timer won't work. I tested motor when I finished the wiring (as specified on side of the motor), and it starts up fine on either speed setting. No further running/testing possible of course until plumbing is in. Just bumped it on for 1-2 seconds each time.
Am I missing something? Don't want to damage it of course, but seems to me a single speed timer should be fine. Thinking perhaps as the toggle model is unusual, the sticker is just standard for all of their 2-speed pumps, as non-toggled varieties would need that.
Thanks for any input. Nice forum.
