Having a pool put in and the waterline tile was installed with a glob of mastic in the middle. I realize these tiles won’t be walked on but I’m still concerned about some of them breaking on the corners. Is this typical for pool builds? (I know it’s not the way other tile should be installed)104523C070A36B-E4C5-4239-B501-C776449F3EBE.jpeg

 Welcome to TFP!

That looks lazy to me. I would want them installed with troweled mastic on the walls or tiles and then pressed into place. Then they scrape out the gaps to allow the grouting.

First, mastic should never be used in exterior applications or anywhere likely to be exposed to water. A modified thinset rated for submerged applications should be used instead. And no, a back-buttered glob is not the correct way to install any tile.
