Question about pH

Does anyone know why pH creeps up with no use of a spa? I balanced one day and didn't use it and the next day, the pH was 7.2, when I had left it at 7.8. I'd left ALK at 40 and it had dropped to 30.

Do you mean pH dropping?

I'm confused about the question, clearly. Are you using pucks/tablets? Low TA can also cause pH to drop.

TA shouldn't drop unless you are draining and refilling with low TA water. You probably will want to raise your TA a bit if you want your pH to be a bit more stable.

That being said, I'm also having low pH issues when I don't aerate. Dunno why it happens when I don't do something that I know will cause it to drop (such as pucks or adding CYA).

Oh yes, sorry- I meant pH dropping.

We use a bromine floater. This was just after a drain and refill. We always are battling low TA. It was at 30 when i started. I got it to 50 but the pH was too high and then I got it to 40 and left it there as the pH was already at 7.8.

I think bromine tablets can lower pH. A quick check tells me yes, that bromine's pH is about 4.

I think you can use the baking soda to increase TA, but then will probably need muriatic acid to lower pH. Actually I believe the process is to lower pH with acid, then add baking soda which will raise TA a lot and pH a little. If you've got low pH right now, you should be able to safely add baking soda to raise TA.
