Hello all,

New to this group. Thank God I found you guys cuz our pool was a hot mess a few weeks ago. So I did the slam but had not received our new test kit yet. I think it worked as the pool was holding chlorine and we were only having to add a little each day. I always assumed that it was safe to keep the free chlorine from 1-3, but read on here it should be higher if your stabilizer is higher (ours is at 50). This is our 3rd year with the pool and we had always used pucks in the past, but obviously ran into problems with high stabilizer. We are trying to avoid that this year. So long story short, not sure what happened, but my chlorine bottomed out to zero. So I am in the process of slamming again. The pool looks clean and clear I think I got on top of it right away. My question is what does your process look like for maintaining a good free chlorine level when not slamming. How often do you add chlorine? How much chlorine do you go through on a weekly basis. Right now just using liquid 12.5%, but am hoping to use pucks too just for the ease of it plus you burn through the liquid chlorine so fast during the day. And our pool is directly in the sun until the late afternoon. Any help would be appreciated. All of our numbers are in a good range, just doing the slam for our chlorine. Oh one last thing. I read you can still swim while slamming as long as the chlorine is in an acceptable range. Is this true? How often do you shock it while in slam? Sorry for all of the questions I’m just needing some direction. Thanks!

Hi there... chlorine is an item that requires replenishment as it breaks down from sun and bather load, etc. I use a salt water chlorine maker so it makes and injects my chlorine daily. You're currently using Liquid Chlorine (LC) which usually requires a dose daily or every other day. Many folks who test regularly learn what their pool's appetite for chlorine is and just know they have to pour in x amount daily, even if they don't test.

You don't mention how big your pool is? With a current CYA reading (assuming that's accurate?) your minimum chlorine level is 4ppm, so ideally to cover sun burn off and bather load you should keep it around 7 so that you can lose some daily yet still remain over the minimum of 4.

See this chart- for using Liquid Chlorine it shows you how high you need your chlorine to be. 1-3ppm is outdated pool store belief and unreasonable unless the pool store just wants to sell you products? They don't take into consideration how CYA buffers the chlorine.

Please go to the Settings and find where you can add a Signature Line describing your pool, its finish, size, equipment in use, how you test, etc.
This really helps us answer your questions with a minimum of return questions. Thanks.

Okay I think I updated it correctly. We have a 22,000 gallon kidney shaped plaster pool. Currently using liquid chlorine. We have glass beads as the filter material. We bought a really nice test kit this year it’s a Color 2X kit or something like that. But it’s much more accurate than anything we used in the past and hopefully we never have to rely on pool store tests again!
