My spillover spa also has a little 1/2" "tunnel" connecting it to the pool about 8" below the water line. I can't figure out why it was designed this way. Maybe to keep the spa from ever running dry? I don't like mixing hot spa water with pool water so I put a rubber plug in it.

I don't think there would be sufficient mixing to balance chemicals very effectively. There is barely any flow through it. I run spillover mode an hour per day to take care of spa>pool mixing. However, the spillover is a new addition so perhaps the connection was there before the spillover and was kept.
