Pump strainer basket getting clogged

I have a 20k gallon in ground pool. This year I replaced my old single speed 1hp Pentair pump with a variable speed 2hp Black and Decker pump. It's mostly going well, but the pump strainer keeps getting clogged and causing no/low flow. I have a regular looking skimmer basket and a regular looking grate over the bottom drain, but I can barely go a few hours before the pump stops working if there's a decent amount of stuff blowing into the pool from the trees.

I don't remember having this problem with the Pentair. Could it just be that the new pump strainer is finer than the old one (and the skimmer)? What can I do about that? I've started putting filter socks on the strainer basket, which helps, but the filter socks get clogged up pretty quickly.

Getting really frustrated here and I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm thinking about maybe just removing the pump strainer.

Remove the pump basket and you will be dismantling the pump to clear the clogged impeller. That's why it is there in the first place, last line of defense to protect the pump.
A pool filtration system can only be clogged by what is getting into the pool from your and any neighbors' yards.
It is possible that the basket in the new pump is finer mesh than the Pentair.
The skimmer socks are doing their job.
Pools are like large infants. They need constant care and feeding and some more than others, sorry.
