Pump Sizing

Recently moved into this house. I need a new pump. Going with a variable speed.

The existing pump is 1.5 HP.
The pool company is recommending a 2.0 HP pump.
It's a 22' x 45' Gunite, with a spa.
The 4 suction lines are 1.5", built into a 2" header.
It appears the entire pool is 1.5" PVC, with the exception of 2" headers, bushed down to accept the 1.5" PVC.

Pool company says this size pool should have been built with a 2hp pump. I don't have experience with pools.

Is a 2hp pump too big for 4 suction lines 1.5" ?

tb,

With a variable speed pump, HP is really not a factor.. Think of then as variable HP pumps instead.. I have two rent houses that have 3 HP IntelliFlo pumps.. Both pools have 1.5" plumbing and they work just fine.

The neat thing about VS pumps is that you run them at whatever HP (RPM) you want to fit your situation. And they save on the electrical bill...

For reference I can run the IntelliFlo, at 1,200 RPM, 24/7 for less than $20 bucks a month.

Thanks for posting,
