Hi there,
I've got a pool pump that's got a fair few years on it. it's an AO Smith 3/4hp (rpm 3450) which I gather isn't sold anymore. Anyway, shaft is pitted and starting capacitor blew again this spring (did that last year too). it's time for a new pump. I've got a 36X15 foot inground gunnite pool about, 25,000 gallons, 11/2"plumbing and a pony panel for 220V. I'm in Canada so not as hot as some places and pool only used half the year. Does it make sense to buy a variable speed pump? If so can folks comment on brand and size recommendations for a pool like mine? What about a conventional pump with perhaps a timer added?
So far the one quote i have is for a Pentair supermax VS variable speed pump for $2400 installed with taxes. I'm thinking about installing it myself so I'd likely only pay for the pump but then for this model, it's still 1850 + tax. Also I understand it's 1.5HP, that's significantly more than the 3/4hp pump i'm replacing. Is that necessary?
Any advice/recommendations welcome.
thank you
