Pump or filter the problem?

Hey everyone, kind of a weird issue here. Background info: I'm in the 2nd swim season of my above-ground 30' round pool w/ a 1.5hp 2-speed BlueTorrent pump and PRC180 filter.

Symptoms:
-starts great, but then drops to very low pressure coming from jet inside pool.
-pump very hot to the touch, can't hold hand on it for more than a few seconds.
-filter PSI is around 11-12 when clean, but jumps up to about 18

To fix this, I can rinse the filter cartridge off and the high speed works for somewhere between 30 minutes and a few hours. There's no real pattern that I can identify, so it is getting more frustrating as time goes by. One thought I had was that maybe in the time it takes me to rinse off the filter, the pump is cooling off, and my real issue is overheating. The filter cartridge is nearly perfect when I remove it from the filter, but in the process of rinsing it and placing it back something happens that allows the pump to work again. I contacted the pool store that I got my pool from last year and they said it was the cartridge, so I replaced the cartridge only to have the same problem. The PSI is normally around 11-12, but when the pump pressure drops the PSI jumps up to around 18. This happens even with a clean filter. Yesterday, the high speed only worked for about 10 seconds each time before the pressure was drastically reduced and the PSI jumped up.

Now a last note, and I'm sure I'll get some "shame on you" comments but it is what it is. I am running the pump on an extension cord (contacted the company and it is approved with the proper gauge wire and grounding). The cord is 10/3 outdoor-rated, however the real reason I included this is that it does happen to be a long cord at more than 10' so I'm not sure how that factors in.

C,

Sounds to me like your filter is doing what it should... filter all the bad stuff out of the water. :p

If your water is green, or even if it is not green and just cloudy, a small cartridge filter will plug up pretty fast.

Since you have been a member here for a while you know the drill... :p

That's what the pool store guy said, but it does it with a clean filter almost immediately sometimes so it's gotta be something else. Plus my water is crystal clear right now (has been for a few weeks). Below are results:

FC: 8
CYA: 55
CH: 80
PH: 7.6
TA: 90

That's what the pool store guy said...

C,

Wait!!... are you accusing me of only being as good as the pool store guy??? :p

I am not sure what else it can be because your pressure goes up from 12 to 18... If the motor was bad and the pump was failing you would think that the pressure would go down not up.

I assume the pressure increase coincides with the reduced flow back to the pool? I ask this just to make sure part of the problem is not a bad (sticky) pressure gauge...

Filter pressure only goes up when the filter is clogged or when something else in the return line is blocked...

Let's see if one of our other members might have some ideas and can chime in...

How about posting a picture of your equipment pad.. Maybe something will stand out.

Thanks,

Jim R.

haha definitely not!

Yeah the PSI jump coincides with the reduced flow, but it happens with a clean filter just a few seconds after turning the pump on. I have even been draining the water in the filter casing itself to ensure that there is nothing hovering in the water that could immediately clog the filter back up.

Maybe another symptom too is that when the PSI jumps and the flow drops, there is a loud whooshing noise that comes from my pump. I'm not sucking air from the skimmer, and I can't detect any leaks in the system either.
