My pool sprang a leak overnight, an the water dropped below the level of the skimmer (no main drain. I had my variable speed pump running on lowest speed. In all likelihood it ran dry for some time. Outwardly the pump looks fine, but I haven't had a chance to run it yet, as I just got the liner replaced and am in the process of filling the pool. The pump is on a timer so it had stopped running by the time I noticed the water had dropped in the morning.
Assuming it starts and sounds ok when it runs, would you:
1) Leave it alone unless it leaks or starts to sound rough
2) Open it up and replace the shaft seal
3) Let it run this season, and replace the shaft seal in the fall
Obviously if it doesn't work, leaks or sounds rough I'll open it it and replace the seal, bearings or other parts as appropriate.
