Pump Inlet pipe at 2 inches or 1.5 inches

Hello gang,

I am going to replace my 2 suction side valves with a 3-way diverter. I have dissimilar pipe diameters coming in and need some advice.
The skimmer is 2-inch PVC. The main drain is 1.5 inch. The feed from the 3-port diverter could be 2 inches with a male adapter or 1.5-inch union at the pump inlet.
As I do this replacement. I cannot change the suction lines diameter, but I do have a choice about that short feed from the Pentair 3-port diverter to the pump inlet.
Is it better to have that at 2 or 1.5 inches considering the suction lines?

Thanks.

Paul
