I have read that when a pool sits with the pump off that chemicals will tend to sink towards the bottom. So how effective is pump placement at in acheiving the goals proposed in either of the following two scenarios?

1. Pump from shallow end, on top step of platform stairs, to pump more fresh water and preserve CYA/chemicals.

2. Pump from deep end to remove more chemicals (lower CYA).

What are you trying to do ?

Both of your scenarios work at my house during the winter when the pool sits for months accumulating 2 or 3 ft of rain.

You get 3 ft all year in Wimberley. How long will the pump be off ?

I had just went through the process of adding a few pounds of stabilizer then got the heavy rains so I was hoping to pump without affecting the CYA levels, if at all possible.

It won't work for that. The pump would need at least a couple inches of rain on top to get any of it and would mix the couple inches of pool water below that. When I do it over the winter, I have a foot+ of fresh water on top
