Good Morning Everyone.

I currently "flip" houses with my father in law. Our current project came with a 22' x 54" above ground pool that was ridiculously neglected for the past 2 years. The winter cover was torn, water black, and tons of debris.

CYA was off the charts so I drained half the water which also assisted with getting the debris off the bottom.

Long story short, after refilling, cleaning, scrubbing, and most importantly "SLAMming", I now have a crystal clear pool with the following test results: (using my TFT-100 of course)

FC - 6
CC - 0
Ph - 7.3
TA - 120
CH 100
CYA - 40

My question, can pucks be used in order to maintain all of the work that went into this? I am not able to get to the property on a daily basis so I was hoping that a floating puck may assist. I will be there at least 3 times per week to check the levels so I can adjust with bleach then.

Thanks all!!

Mike

The answer is yes. You can use pucks to assist in keeping the pool chlorinated. But as the CYA level increases, you will need to increase your FC level. And you will need to drain and refill appropriately to keep the CYA/FC relationship from getting out of hand.

I'm a newbie here, but if it were me I'd just bring the chlorine up to shock level every time you go by there. I wouldn't use the pucks because it will raise CYA. If you're going by three times a week I think just chlorine is the best option. I know some more knowledgeable people will check in, so maybe they'll have a better plan.

Do you intent to flip this house? Pucks will increase the CYA but it will take some time. Use Pool Math to calculate how much CYA per puck and estimate your expected rise. You could use only 1 or 2 pucks per week and boost the FC when you get there, ideally at least twice a week.

Maybe you should setup a temporary Stenner pump for daily LC injections. You could always remove it when the house sells and then keep it on hand for any other house-flipping projects that come with a pool. Just write it off as the cost of doing business....

Pucks can certainly be used but try to be kind to next owner and leave them with a TFP-ready pool.....and don't forget to tape TFP business cards all over the sides of the pool and pool equipment. Leave a few inside in the kitchen drawers and taped to the fridge too....
