I just plumbed in a hayward chlorinator in my pool. It's just past the filter and before the water goes underground to return to the pool. It's currently free standing. You can see it in the attached picture. There’s a 1.5 inch line on each side and that’s the only support it has. I don’t have a good sense of that’s enough or if I need to support it with something under it. It’s clear below it so putting some kind of support there wouldn’t be that hard but getting it into place with the exactly correct height feels difficult.

Any suggestions?

The curious side of me wants to know why you installed that tab feeder. However - that's how they're supposed to be installed. There's an unused one on my equipment pad which looks the same, granted it's in between two big jandy valves sticking out out of the ground, so there's more inherent support.

You could run a 90 right out of the filter down to the ground and rest the chlorinator on a slab or block but then you'd have to replumb the valves. It always makes me nervous seeing those things suspended in free air, but you see plenty of them that way!

Double check the new elbows. They appear to be DWV (Drain/Waste/Vent) fittings, not intended for pressure applications. They can probably handle the low pressures of pool systems, but the walls are thinner and don't have the strength of pressure-rated SCH 40 fittings. That may be a concern.

Check out this post for ideas on using PVC pipe to build a cradle and support for the chlorinator.

Just a quick word of warning about the use of tablets. Trichlor tablets contain chlorine stabilizer (CYA). The sustained use of trichlor will result in a quick rise of CYA. Once CYA is in the water, it can only removed by water replacement. TFP recommends using liquid chlorine or a SWG.

Best wishes!
