Prefilter my filter

So I got a new pump and filter last year and it works great, though I've been having this one issue. Whenever the strainer gets full and it automatically turns back on, the strainer (most of the time) will flip causing all the debris to go into the pump. My guess is that once leaves and stuff get lodged in the strainer, it causes the strainer to float when the pump is off. So when it turns back on, it flips.

I try to empty it as much as possible but it never fails that it fills up overnight and it'll flip in the morning.

Is there a way that I can prefilter the big stuff out so the strainer doesn't get clogged? Is this a job for a skimmer sock?

Are you talking about the skimmer basket? If so, use polypropylene hairnets to line the basket and put a small rock or stone in tbe bottom of the basket to weight it down.
