I've suspected a leak in my pool for a while. but never really had the time to dedicate to finding/fixing it. Old pump motor broke about 4 weeks ago so nothing has been running until this weekend.

When the pump was out of action, I noticed that the pool level did not move at all but the spa level dropped a noticable amount (~ 5") to be basically at the same level as the pool. I swapped out the check valve and this fixed that. This was about 10 days ago. Everything stayed at the same level. Finally got the new motor installed over the weekend and now see the pool level dropping again. I'm thinking it may the the spillover where the leak is (previous owner did some patch work). No leaks from the new motor install and the rate at which the pool level falls is the same as before the new motor was installed.

Whats the best way to test for this? I'm thinking of closing off the spa return for a few days to see what happens, basically isolating it. If I'm right the water won't go over the spillover and if the pool level stays the same I can be confident the leak is there...

Good idea? Terriible idea?

Thanks.

Welcome to TFP.

it is worth a try. If you shut down your spa spillover you need to add some liquid chlorine to your spa daily to keep it chlorinated and algae free.

What test kit do you use?

How do you chlorinate your pool?

Post some pics of your pool and show us that patched area of the spillover.

Thanks. I'll know with 24/48 hours if its the cause or not. Will post some pics when I get home. Using a SWG (Autopilot Digital Nano +).

Currently using a pool guy to look after it so no test kit but plan to start taking care of the pool myself at the start of next month. Busy reading the guides here to get a feel for what I need to know. Sounds like something I should have done a while ago but better late then never eh?

Hard to maintain the chlorine in your spa when the spillover is shut without a test kit.

Get the TF-PRO SALT or TF-100 SALT Test Kits

Yeah, I know. Seems like I fell into the trap that many others have of trusting the pool guy who comes once a week, when realistically it needs better taking care of.

Been looking at the two kits you mentioned and plan to purchase ASAP. Maybe I postpone my "test" until I get the kit.

Should not be any rush to do the test.

No one cares about your pool the way you do.
