Pool Store Has Given Up

I just wanted to say welcome  You've gotten great advice thus far. TFtestkits.net is located in the raleigh area...so you are only talking 2-3 days...and sometimes better on delivery.

Duraliegh (aka Dave) owns tftestkits and TFP (sort of like feeding the hand that's helping you) and has GREAT customer service :goodjob:

Outside of the TF100, if you can find a Taylor K2006, that is a great kit too. Leslies does carry a rebadged K2006, but not in stores...the store will just try to sell you the DPD complete kit...which is not what you want

Thanks Butterfly!

lol    you're welcome.
Have you seen our blonde moderator's sig? frustratedpoolmom found TFP
while the Frog was turning her family's hair and dog's hair green, and staining their pool!
She felt/feels pretty strong about the Frog.
Here's a copy of her sig - I highlighted part:

:) I feel for her! I have been scared to death to get in when the water turned green. It has been 90+ degrees here for a while and I am soooo tired of looking at the pool.

I have one suggestion is that instead of draining just to lower your CYA to 60 or so, drain even more (not all the way of course) to get rid of even more of the copper, and you can always add CYA if your CYA gets too low. That way you don't have to use as much sequestrant and save some $$$. Unless of course water is expensive in your area.

I have never drained more than just a backflush. What is the best way to do that?

You can vacuum to waste until you have dropped 1/3 of the pool volume, or you can rent/buy a submersible pump to drain the pool. Where does the water go when you vacuum to waste?

Is your Frog system one of these? Note how it is called FROG® Mineral Systems. The Pool Frog Mineral Reservoir is registered with the EPA number 53735-11 and is listed in the PAN Database here where you can clearly see that the "mineral" they use is silver chloride. Their FAQ under "Minerals In Your Pool" says the following:

What minerals are in your system and how do they work?
Silver and limestone. The silver destroys bacteria and the limestone absorbs acids from chemicals, like chlorine, helping to maintain a neutral pH.
So I'm not sure where the copper is coming from, but silver can stain pool surfaces as well (usually black).

I noticed your signature was brief, but do you have a pool heater? The copper in there could also contribute to this condition if it is corroding ???
My question marks are really to the site experts... I'm just trying to think outside the box.

Good luck!

To answer the last few questions:

I did start vacuuming to waste, thought there was not a speck on the bottom! LOL. The water runs to a natural area we have.

I do understand that the Frog system states that it is silver & limestone, but other then the Frog we have no clue where such a high amount of copper is coming from. The Frog system has been listed as the Frog Mineral system for at least 8 years that I know. You have to buy the reservoir filled with minerals & a bac pac with chlorine that goes inside the open area of the reservoir.

We have had the fill water tested and it was fine. (No copper)

So it is either that it is has been correctly said here that it is the frog or someone is throwing copper in my pool while I am not around. ;) LOL Really if it is not the Frog any other suggestions ChemGeek?

I put in the recommended bleach last night after a vacuum to waste and refill. I will not be able to get numbers until the pool store opens. The pool right now does still look the same.

As for the Frog -- who knows -- maybe the product has changed its components over time or they are lying on their website and to the EPA. Certainly using silver alone isn't going to prevent algae growth and usually such mineral systems are either copper only or copper and silver combos. Odds are that it was indeed the Frog that caused the problem unless you or someone else added a copper-based algaecide to the pool.

Anyway, just treat the water with a good HEDP-based metal sequestrant and if you are ambitious and willing to spend money on a yet unproven product you can take a look at CuLator. I'm trying to get someone to try it who actually has measured metals in their pool since that is something that can be readily validated to see if this product works as advertised. This product will (supposedly) physically remove the metal from the water so would eventually not require having to keep adding metal sequestrant.

The only algaecide we did add at at opening (May 1st) was a non copper based 60. The pool is still crystal and green. I do not have all my numbers in front of me but the copper is now reading at 4.7. Ugh! Everything else but the calcium was in range. (The calcium is low which we know, but stopped treating when we started trying to get control of this copper)
I will go ahead and try the CuLator. I will place an order Monday since I am anyway with Amazon. Heck it can't hurt and the Jack's Magenta did not work.
We have spent the day removing screws from the stair cases and replacing them. Just in case one was causing the copper from rusting. I just don't know what the heck is doing it and after draining and replacing so much water really thought the reading would be down.

I have seen several reports that minced banana peels can be used to remove copper.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 113030.htm

I'll try it. What could it hurt at this point? Any suggestions on how to do it?
It's not a known process, so I can't recommend it. I am not sure what is involved or what issues it could cause. The cuLator product that chem geek referenced would be a better choice.

[edit] I probably shouldn't have mentioned this here as it is not a known, proven process. I do not recommend that anyone try to use banana peels for removing copper. [end edit]
