Hi all!

As highlighted, pool start up after 1.5yrs of house renovations. I used 68% Cal Hypo (no CYA added) every 2 weeks to maintain due to dirt and stuff from the backyard. We finally got to the point where the project was done. To open, I decided to SLAM. Ran it for 2 days. The numbers, using the old test kit came out fairly high.

FC: 30
CYA: 100
TA: 90
PH: 9
CH: 1500. ( did it 2x, I think I need to retest with new regent)

Are the following steps right? All are based on my fav app, ie Pool Math!
12k gallon pool - 79 degrees (and climbing to 90!)
1) PH - 90oz of 14.5% MA to reduce PH to about 7.2
2) TA - At 7.2 Aeroate to get to about 70
3) Let FC drop down to 7
4) I'll eventually want to do the Vitamin C treatments as there is a little bit of staining as out area is about 40% ground water.

For CH and CYA, it recommended about 40% pool drain and refill. What happens if I don't? Get Chlorine lock due to CYA? At 1500 CH, scaling? Thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

If at all possible I would start here. Exchange water as to not waste chemicals. Maintaining a high FC level to compensate for the very high CYA is not good and makes future pH reading impossible. Lowering the CH will also help to reduce future scale build up. I would start with the water exchange, then re-test everything and go from there.

As you’ve learned, cal hypo has similar issues to the trichlor since it adds calcium which will eventually scale up your equipment and pool. You need at least a 50% drain, probably 75% because of the calcium.

Then you just need to chlorinate with liquid chlorine or a salt chlorinator.

Side note about the staining, confirm what it is first. It may be iron (test with Vitamin C tablet), perhaps organic (rub a chlorine tab on it), or it may be calcium build up that looks dingy. I wouldn't be surprised if it's calcium scale based on those numbers, but at least you would know for future treatment options.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll drain 50% to start with soon. I'll double check the iron vs calcium staining. I had iron stains before. ever thought of the difference.

Question for now. Can we use the pool this weekend at such a high level CYA and CH after I lower the PH?
