Pool Pump question

Just opened my pool and instead of having the dirty water go through my filter, I wanted to create a vacuum, using a Hayward 1580, to suck out water and debris. The problem that I'm running into is that I fill the basket area up with water, turn the pump on, and that water gets sucked out right away, but the water isn't getting sucked up through the hose in the pool.

Am I doing something wrong? What do I need to do to get this pump going?

Could be a suction side air leak.
Could be debris on pump impeller.
How many times did you try priming the pump & how long are you letting the pump run?

Good Point, It could be a leak on my hose fitting. I'll have to check it.
Also, I noticed that I'm able to unscrew the strainer from the body of the pump with that being said, I noticed that there was some play to it, meaning if I was to really tighten it, the clear cover would be facing down. Is it supposed to be tight or should there be some wiggle room there?
