Pool opening, water is green, what shall I throw in there?

Ok the good, the bad and the ugly.

The water is definitely getting clearer. I am guilty of not brushing the pool, I did it once in 14 days, I just did it again. The ladder is not in yet.
My CYA went down to 50 from 60, so I will adjust my FC level at 20.
Is the non brushing responsible for the slam being in its 14th day?
My CYA went down from 60 to 50 so I was putting more bleach than required. Is too much bleach bad?

Thank-you

Patrick

Too much bleach could be harsh over an extended time, but I doubt that's an issue with you right now. It's good you checked the CYA though. Neglecting the scrubbing aspect is indeed very important. Without the scrubbing, algae tends to stay protected against the pool surfaces by its own type of biofilm. It holds-on to the bitter end. The brushing exposes the organic material to the bleach to effectively kill it better. That's why even though we've all heard the term "SLAM" many times here at TFP, even those of us here everyday go back and refresh ourselves on those pages just to make sure we're not forgetting to perform even the smallest task. When everything is done as instructed, the SLAM typically works extremely well in most cases.

Ideally you should be testing and adding bleach several times a day with the goal of not letting FC to get below 20. The longer it is below 20, the faster the algae is able to rebound. It is hard to tackle if you have to be away for work and ales the process longer but it is doable. Make sure to brush every day. You'll get there.

You can go a little above target when you can't be there. Going too far over, though doesn't help, it burns off faster. But if you're only losing a little throughout the day, bumping it up a bit can help.

Darn that thing called work!

Morning coffee then test and add

Home, take off shoes, test and add

Dinner get glass of wine, test and add

Before bed, test and add.

That is 4 times and should keep you going!
