Would like to get opinions on the lighting for the pool we are about to build. Wondering if 1 pool light will be ok? Placement? Should we add a light on the shelf above steps?
Pool area is roughly 22'x23' and shelf dimensions are roughly 6x9, Depth of pool is 3'6" to 6', white or a light grey DB plaster...

Thanks in advance... Aaron

The number would depend, with a light plaster and if you are going with a white light, one in the pool area would probably light it, if you are going with LED and you might want a couple. The colors are never as bright.

I like what Afton did where he placed the arrows on the drawing, just don't put them on the far wall pointed back at the house - you don't want to be looking into the light - go with the sides pointing in or the walls nearest the house to they point out.

The lights come in three sizes, more or less - nicheless lights (e.g., Hayward 160/320), spa lights, and pool lights.

You can use any combination of the above in your pool. If you use only nicheless lights, you will need more and for the sake of placement you should ascertain from the manufacturer what the beam spread and lumen output is.

I would recommend the same thing for spa lights if you use those in the pool.

The typical pool light has a beam spread of 20 to 25 feet so one pool light should cover the length of your pool. What it may not cover is the area next to the spa and the shelf. For those areas, you may consider one spa light (area next to spa) and one nicheless light (shelf) or just two nicheless lights.
