I replaced the gasket on my pool light last year after the GFCI was tripping. It was working for a while after that and now it's shorting out again. I figured I didn't get the gasket on quite right, but I don't see any water inside the light, so maybe not.
I opened the J-box behind the pool this morning and there is no sign of water or a short in the box itself. Voltage from the switch to the J-Box tests a normal 120V so I am sure the problem is between the J-Box and light bulb. Resistance between the leads from the light tests at 2.6 Ohms. Not sure exactly what it's supposed to be, but that seems very low.
I suspect water's getting in near the joint where the wire enters the fixture. There's small cracks in the insulation at this point. Is it possible to cut the wire an inch back and re-attach a fixture (either this fixture or buy a replacement fixture)? There is a bunch of mastic in the light niche cementing the wire into place. I am not going to cut into the mastic in order to replace the wire from the junction box for fear of causing a leak. I'll hire a pro to do that eventually, but it's not a priority now unless I can do this myself.
