Pool finish / water color questions

Hello. We are installing a fiberglass pool in a few weeks and I’m feeling really nervous about the finish color choice. I really really want a turquoise, tropical water color rather than blue. I’m told that that would mean a white pool finish. The installer we are using hasn’t had anyone choose white for us to look at. I’ve looked at pictures online where the water color looks perfect and others where it just looks clear. Any advice? The pools I see in California all have the color I’m going for but I assume they’re all concrete, more of a beige finish, bigger and deeper, and in a more open space than ours will be. Our pool will be 16X36 with max depth of 5.5’.

Hi there Lauren :handwave: Welcome to TFP!

I think if you look at multiple fiberglass companies websites you'll see a variety of pics, and surely one should have a filled white pool on display? Also check out Pinterest.

I do think the beige/tan pools tend to look more greenish than blue.

All I can think of is to keep looking online, and maybe someone here will chiime in with their pool and a pic. Which brand pool are you getting?

Thanks, Maddie. I’ve looked at probably thousands of pictures but I don’t trust them. I guess I’m looking for personal experience or warnings. Such as: it looks turquoise in direct sun but clear in shadow or at shallow depths...the pool installer is River Pools in Virginia. Their most popular color is a dark blue and that’s about 90% of what they install. Pretty, but not the look I’m going for. I’m just nervous that I’ll pick the white and it will end up looking like a bath tub!

For what it is worth—we have a plaster pool but the plaster is white. The water looks blue to me even in cloudy weather—maybe not as Blue as in clear skies because the sky reflects in the pool. Not sure if the inside pool material affects the color that significantly or not. I will look for some cloudy day pictures of our pool if that would help?

Look at some more tan or gray color pools. I think they have more chance of the greenish turquoise than the white pools.

(sidenote: I've always appreciated your builder from afar and the excellent education their website and videos provide)

We have a bright white plaster, water is perfectly blue. When the realtor showed us the house she told us the pool had a blue finish (she knew nothing about pools) but when I walked over and looked at it, it was obviously white. We refinished a few years ago and went with bright white again.

I blathered on through multiple posts over multiple pages to another here that asked about picking a pool color! I sure do like to hear myself talk!! But maybe you'll find something useful, if you can get through it all!! ;)

There's a lot that applies to a plaster/pebble pool, but some ideas about color are universal...

Help me decide on a pool finish color :))
