Another newbie question My Free Chlorine is 12.5 with a 120 CYA

I just did the CL drop test in my kit and it reads the Cl level is high. Its darker than the colors on the test block.
I planned on using the pool for the first time today and am now wondering if its safe.

Thanks

The CL drop test is meaningless. Just use the FAS/DPD test.

At a CYA of 120 it is safe to swim with a FC up to 48.

Go enjoy your pool.

Can you see the bottom of the pool? Then you are safe to swim.

You are flirting with algae.

With CYA of 120 and FC 12.5, the amount of HOCL in the pool is .045.
0.011 ppm HOCl is the level that the U.S. and WHO set as the minimum required for disinfection.
0.05 ppm HOCl of the minimum level of chlorine needed to prevent algae.

Go swim, enjoy the pool, but I'd add some chlorine and raise that FC. You will have consumption with swimmers etc.

At some point, I would lower your CYA by replacing water.

Yes the water is very clear. Thx

Question. What is causing me to flirt with Alage? High CYA?

More newbie questions.
Since this is the first time we are using the pool
Shoud I run the pump after we are out of the pool? Say overnight.
We will be out of the pool around 6PM due to the grandkids bedtimes.

Is it safe to wait until the following morning to test FC and CC? Or should I do it right away?

Thanks

I can answer your questions, need more info.

What kind of super pump do you have? Is it variable speed?
Do you have a solar cover?
How is your SWCG setup (run times and %).

Hi
Hayward Super Pump not variable speed
No Solar cover
SWG Normally runs 10-4 at 100%, today I started the system at 6:30 AM and had planned to run until we are out of the pool.

Thx

Got it.

Here is what I do. I have a cover and it stays on. I run 24/7 at 15%. When we get in the pool in May/June/July, I turn the SWCG up to 50% until we are done, then I turn it back down and cover the pool. My FC stays steady and the 50% keeps up with the sun and swimmer load.

Yes, I would test the water at the end of the swim. If your FC is still in range for your CYA, you are likely ok. If not you can add some liquid chlorine to get it back into range and let the SWCG do its thing to maintain it. Or, you can turn the SWCG/pump on. Remember, however, that the SWCG is NOT good at raising FC. So always RAISE FC with chlorine, and maintain with SWCG. I wouldn't worry about CCs
