Pool chemistry for those that have liver/ lung issues

I have a question -not sure anyone has the answer. Some of my family are Alpha 1s. One is Liver , the other is both Liver and Lung. After they swim, they complain that they have a hard time breathing- which I am assuming might be the chlorine.
I was thinking of moving to bromine.
Does anyone on here also have an Alpha or someone that has Liver and lung issues? Have you done anything to your pool chemistry to lessen any negative effects?

It may be best to first know how you have been maintaining your pool?
Are you following TFP methods or something else?
Post a full set of current test results from one of the recommended test kits.

Bromine can be just as irritating as chlorine and some people are allergic to bromine-treated water. It’s highly likely that the pool water is simply becoming aerosolized while they’re in it and/or chloramine formation is happening and those two conditions are leading to them breathing in pool water and irritating disinfection by-products that most people aren’t sensitive to. A1AD already puts them in a weakened state where their lungs can’t take much irritation. Swimming, like being around smokers, is probably ill-advised for them. Only their doctors can tell them what’s best.

Pool therapy is one of the recommended physical activities for Alpha 1s.

Conjoining @JoyfulNoise and @proavia recommendations, and the fact that your reached out about "lab" testing in 2023, and ended up buying (apparently) the K-2005 and the reagents for the FAS-DPD FC testing, even though you dislike the testing, knowing this is important to you, can you post a full set of test results?

Given the therapy recommendations, and the potential issues with the condition of your pool, with proper testing and chemical balance, you may find we can help you keep your pool in a condition that would allow your family to use the pool.

We are not medical professionals. But given the recommendation WRT pool therapy, Alpha 1s, may be able to tolerate the pool if the chemistry is right. This is not medical advice, but if we can "clean up" your pool in any way that would allow them to use it, it would be a bonus.

Yes, I am following the trouble free pool. This was July 1st. I didn't log my last tests - thought I had save it, to the ap, but didn't. I will post tomorrow's as well.

It would be helpful to the TFP advisors helping you if you could fill in your signature. Something as comprehensive as mine might help them help you better.
Edit it here.

I know absolutely nothing about the medical conditions you're asking about. But here's a possibility. If a slight increase in the salinity of your pool water won't create any additional health issues, by using a saltwater chlorine generator carefully to provide your chlorination, it's possible to decrease the chlorine content in your water (your FC) by up to 50%. You could run your pump for every daylight hour, and reduce your FC to as low as 3, and because the FC is constantly being replenished while the sun is using it up, you would never have to endure any FC spikes.

Typical dosing with liquid chlorine, even if you add it as often as once a day, means that right after you dose, the FC will be high, so that as it degrades over the course of the day, you have enough to last the 24 hours. But an SWG produces a small amount of chorine about every five minutes, such that the FC remains virtually constant throughout the day. That's why SWG pools can usually get by with a lower FC. Maybe you could keep your pool properly sanitized with an FC as low as 3. Maybe that would help.

Some of us here like to run our FC a bit hot, so that we have a buffer in case something gets into the water that would tank FC (bird droppings, people urinating, rodents drowning, etc). So if you run your FC at the bare minimum, you'd have to be more vigilant. But it's possible. It might be that you test your FC just before you all swim, so that you can be assured it's as low as possible, but not too low to be unsafe for swimming.

Another possibility, if an SWG is not in the budget, would be to rethink how and when you dose FC. By reducing your CYA, and so your minimum FC, you could plan your swim time to be at the low end of your FC cycle. Then dose your FC back up after you swim. So, for example, you dose FC to 5 in the evening, after you're done with the pool, and it will begin to naturally drop for the next 20-22 hours. As it gets down to your FC minimum of 2 or 3, then you have your swim for a few hours, and then dose again back up to 5 after everyone gets out. Something like that.

It might take some experimenting with your FC test kit to determine just the right cycle, but it should be possible.

Anywho, just spit-balling... Let's see what the experts say about your current test results along with your equipment configuration (once you complete your signature).
