Pool Build - California Dreaming - 3 Years Closer

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Today the tile guys completed the almost 140 linear feet of step markers. They were to have finished the bar stools and the spa today as well but they ran out of time. It looks like we still may make plaster fill by end of next week but only if the tile guys can come back tomorrow or Thursday.

Getting so close I can smell the chlorine.

Hey Spillmar....

I've been trying to get fully caught up on this and now I am. I just want to say how much I am enjoying the quest through your posts. Love the design and can't wait to see you finish it. It will truly be something special when you are done. Very unique, and very much like something I'd want if I had the means to do something like this. Truly exceptional!

Best of Luck...Cheering you on from here!

Patrick

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks Patrick for the kind words and wishes.

Today we pull the lights, install the fiber optic illuminators, connect all remaining equipment and test the system. We added a third panel box for the automation controls for the firebowls and firepits. This will contain various 24v transformers and relays.

The stone guys should be on their last day of pre-fill ledgestone work and the countertop base for the swim up bar should be done today.

Tile guys will be back Friday to finish up. For the grout I selected a color called delorean grey. I installed a vertical line of same colored latex caulk every 8 to 10 feet to serve as expansion joints.

I will try to post some pictures soon.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks Brushpup...without sounding bragadocious there is one more Intelliflo for the laminars and column spouts not in the picture. I'll post a picture later today of the whole pad.

The counter base is now done on the swimup bar. Now I have to decide poured concrete tops, granite, glass tile top or other ?

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Concrete Countertops are very cool, you can do a million colors and add stuff like glass, shells, rocks, etc.

I went with granite for our BBQ Island. I found a place off Indiana and VB that is about half the price of the other quotes I got. Their work is not as good as my guys from the kitchen, but I saved about $3,000.

The guys that did my kitchen are affiliated with Riverside Cabinets on Rudicill.

Give me a call if you want to take a look at either job.

I can't seem to find the guys near San Juan that make the custom concrete countertops... If you search for Concrete Countertop, you will get a bunch of hits in the LA area.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

That isn't bragging at all man, just stating facts. Please do post the pics, love to see em. Really tough choice on the CT. I would likely choose Granite I think, but the glass tile.is tempting...You must be the one to choose though....Sorry

Now back to my observation post... ::epds::

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Personally, all the concrete tops that I've seen, they look AWESOME. I opted for tile top for right now, but when the tile goes bad, I'll spend the money to have someone come in and do a concrete top for me. I'm just way past budget now also....

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Very nice. I'm 3 weeks into a similar project, but on a less grand scale. My favorite part (read as sarcasm) is not really knowing how much this thing is going to cost when all is said and done. :)

So far I've learned that I really hate plumbing... or I suppose it would be more accurate to say that I didn't take enough time to research plumbing before I started.

Good luck!

Thanks no mas.
XAIO that is a good point. I can do tile now and then work toward the counter top later. I could probably install right over it.

YEP, this tile top with all the trim took me one weekend to complete and a couple hundred dollars in material. I still need to finish the cabinet drawers.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Thanks Fyton. right back at ya - Good Luck on your build.

Today we finished all the tile including the submerged bar stools and the spa. The iridescent tile marking the stairs came out very nice. In the sun they sparkle; cant wait to see them with the lights under water.

I decided to have the concrete counter made. It will have not only glass and colored stone mixed in but will also have embedded fiber optics that will light up. I am also running some side glow fiber under the counter and around the coping near the far steps on either side of the swim up bar. This should add a nice glow and allow people to see the steps going in and out of the pool at night since the light does not really reach over that way.

Today we also started building the BBQ/grill area in the sunken patio of the swim up bar area. I expect to finish the walls/cabinets tomorrow and begin to compact and add the pavers in the sunken patio. I installed a sump pump in a box by Liberty, which will pump all water that will accumualte in the sunken patio.

I will try to post some pictures tomorrow. Thanks for your interest and good will TFP friends.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

Here a couple pictures taken this evening; one is of the swim up bar counter that was poured and the other is the first testing of the fiber optic lights under each of the waterfalls. The picture sort of reminds me of Spielberg's Close Encounters.

Everything is working fine. The fiber optic lights are actually much brighter than I had expected. I have 4 illuminators running.

Re: Pool Build - California Dreaming

We just got our pre-fill inspection approved today.

Plaster and fill by Sunday. I can't believe it. :-D

I will post some pre-fill pictures tomorrow.

We did not end up tiling the spa entirely because of concern that the glass would pose a potential hazzard, plus it was ridiculously expensive to tile the whole thing. The swim up counter will be poured and set in place.
