Pool autofiller overflow drain questions

Recently moved to a new house and the pool came with an autofiller, never had one before but I noticed that it looked like overflow hole was clogged and not sure if this was done by design? Can anyone think of a reason this would be clogged on purpose. I live in the desert and pulled some of the material out which didn't look like anything that would occur in the area. Was going to clean it all out with a snake but wanted to confirm this wasnt clogged on purpose.

Many times that ”overflow”fitting is connected to nothing. Most pool builders don’t connect to it.

Thanks chief, if I remove the debris and its connected to nothing where does the water go? The reason I ask is because i removed some at the start of the hole and want to make sure I didnt screw anything up lol

Those canisters come with a plug that fits on the backside. The plug has to be removed and a drain pipe connected for the overflow to work.

Does your pool have an overflow? My pool's overflow is connected directly to landscape drains and bypasses the autofill device.

Rancho I don't believe it has a working overflow, before I realized the pool had an autofill I added water from the hose and had to drain it to get it back out.

Overflow is not really needed here. The likelihood of getting 4++ inches of rain in a short period of time is very remote.
