Pool after a storm

I went back and read some Pool school stuff and it says that algae should never be able to get started as long as FC levels are maintained. my FC levels haven't been below 3.5 in weeks, was at 7 when it started raining, and was at 5 when it stopped raining. hmmmmmmm......

I'm wondering if I have a filter problem or if I'm just not used to how long a sand filter takes to clear up a pool after a big storm. pool water was fairly green though.....

How long has it been since you checked the CYA? If you have had overflow due to rain and also had to lower the water level in the pool you may have lost a significant amount of CYA, causing the FC to burn off more quickly.

I checked it again yesterday so I knew what my proper shock levels were. it was still hanging at 40

Yano... if the water was green and you shocked it...

Green comes from plant matter, in other words, living growing algae (or copper). The chlorine has killed green stuff in your pool and it's not green anymore. Chlorine does nothing for copper.

So... <shrug> Might just be one of those things you accept and move on because it can't be what it isn't. And maybe a little DE for the sand filter??

FC was 8.5 at 9:00 pm tonight. I put in 96 oz of 12.5% chlorine to bring it up to 16 overnight.

We had a pool full of swimmers today. The pool turned mostly blue as the day wore on but still cloudy enough that you couldn't see the bottom of the deep end. Hopefully. tomorrow will be better. With another day of 90+ heat in store, we'll be in again all day.

I only have enough powder for one more test so I'm going to either run it tomorrow before we swim or at the end of the day.

found something interesting though. I have an auto water fill that had not been hooked up. I set it up today and found a bunch of dirty water in the small tank. it was just a foot long line away from the return where it comes out into the pool. I wonder if this was the cause or contributed to my problem. I cleaned it out good so it shouldn't be a problem again.
