Polaris pressure relief valve problem - too much water pressure?

All was going well chez surfbabe..... then the polaris 280 pressure relief valve on the poolside quick disconnect 'popped off". I'm not sure but maybe the polaris was a bit slow beforehand but nothing out of the ordinary.

Now, I've replaced the pressure relief valve and noticed that water is pouring through it and the polaris is hardly moving.

Around the booster pump motor there is water leaking out when the polaris is switched on

Water is going a bit sluggishly through one of the skimmers ( I have 2).

Pressure in the DE filter is about normal 15psi

I have recently replaced the polaris back up valve since the old one stopped working.
Polaris filter is fine.

to me it's obvious that for some reason there is more water pressure going to the polaris booster pump and going through the pipes to the pressure relief valve. This wasn't happening before.

any ideas?

No, I checked the back up valve.
Just looking back through posts here and it seems that the (insert expletive) pool store may have given me the wrong part. I took in the broken valve which had a black bit and they sold me a new valve with a white one. Turns out 2 different part numbers for different cleaners. Would that make a difference?
