My backup valve seems to be blasting water constantly, causing the unit to move backwards into a corner. I haven't opened it up yet, but is this usually because the gears are stuck or is something probably broken inside?

Could be either. You have to open it up, if you can, and take a look.

I think you may find buying a new backup valve is less expensive then the gear mechanism.
Go see what parts you can find before you spend too much time disassembling it.

I opened it up last night the outer-most gear was cracked. Ordered a new one that will be here tomorrow.
