I may have asked this before but how are valves typically organized? For instance, should a skimmer be tied to a bottom drain with a three way or should they be on they own valves? What is typically done versus what would be best practice? Thanks

It's the pool industry. There are no typicals that make any sense. What is typical to one builder may be pure blasphemy to the next. Let's not even consider the pool owner's opinion.

IMO, best practice would be to have everything home run to the equipment pad and then manifold together there with individual valves. This way you have ultimate control over every run. Others may have different opinions.

Your scenario above, if both the skimmer and main drain had their own 2 way diverter valve, then you can individually adjust how much flow you get from each source. Granted, in that case, you have the potential to completely shut off the suction lines. If you tie them together with a 3 way diverter valve, you can only adjust the flow of one or the other. This will also prevent being able to shut off suction completely and prevent damage to the pump. So pros/cons for each method.
