Here is the setup I would suggest. I also removed the extra thermometer you had after the gas heater. You really only need one.

Is it important to have the heat-pump first in the flow (before the gas heater), or does the order not matter?

Yes put the heat pump before the gas heater.

Thank you for your insights. That is what I ended up doing... but I'm not sure what the rationale is. Care to elaborate? Would love to learn why that order makes sense.
