Please Help Me

also, retested my FC..yikes 61. It has only been an hour and a half since adding chlorine. I think I forgot to adjust my total gallons on the PC, I need to lower it if my pool isn't completely full. Will it hurt my pool if it is that high? I will retest tonight and do overnight test in am. thanks for your input.

it normally does- not sure what may have caused the increase...
1- How long did you backwash?
2- Did you rinse after backwash?
3- Was the backwash clear before you stopped?
4- Was the rinse clear before you stopped?

As far as the FC level, that's really high but shouldn't hurt anything if it comes down quickly.
One of the experts can tell you if you need to do anything immediate, but I don't think so- just don't add more for a while!

So then my next step is to do the overnight chlorine test. If that is good then let the FC come back down, right? Once it is under 10 the adjust PH accordingly? If it is cloudy right now at 345pm, can I test it now, or should I wait til dusk? I need to leave at 515 so either before I leave or when I get back after 8pm?

To chemgeek,
I am a little confused on your earlier post when I read through them. You said that overtime, as chlorine is consumed, that it is acidic, and causes PH to drop also. Why then for the low PH prior to shocking?
Because the addition of a hypochlorite source of chlorine (chlorinating liquid, bleach, Cal-Hypo, lithium hypochlorite) raises the pH. When the chlorine gets consumed/used, this is acidic and lowers the pH so that when the FC comes back down you end up about where you started though in practice usually a little higher due to the excess lye in the chlorine and from some carbon dioxide outgassing that can occur in the interim. The initial lower pH is so that when you are at shock level the pH isn't too high.

Thanks for explaining that. If I take a sample of water now, wait 1 hour to have it tested at the store ( I am out of reagent so i need to get some more), will that make me have a false FC reading? should I take the sample now or at 9am?

ok, so I just tested my FC levels because the store said that they were "too high", and I just got time to do it. my FC is 30 right now. Should I add more chlorine to get it to 45? and then wait to see how much is lost overnight? Or do I take a sample tonight and see in the morning? If i pass the overnight test, then I shouldn't need to shock anymore right? I did get my FC to 61 yesterday and hour after I added the chlorine...nothing should be able to live with it that high.

My FC is 40 right now. Last night at 5pm it was 45. there was still a little sun left, but had to test it then. Should I wait and do another over night test and then see if I pass? I cannot believe that there could be anything living in there. my CC i less than 0.5 and my pool is clear. There is a pale beige cloud that I see when I brush the pool. Do you think it is dead algae or living? thanks for the input.

Now might be a good time to recap. Could you post a full set of water test results and describe how the water looks today?

Since you had to test FC early yesterday, we don't know if you lost chlorine overnight or not.

Dust clouds when you brush is normal, and doesn't really tell us anything about live or dead algae.

So my husband did a FC test now since I am at work. He said that the first one he did was 12,then he repeated it to make sure and got 10. He said when he repeated it that the pink color was different each time. I told to repeat the test and make sure that the granules were dissolved. His third result was 13.5. So which one do I use? I am going to get a full reading of everything in the morning when I get off work, probably around 7am. If my FC is within that range that should be a pass for the overnight test. When I tested my FC earlier it was less than 0.5 and my water is clear. If I pass the overnight test, then get my FC to target level according to cya. My CYA yesterday when I tested it was 110. We do have our level of water at minimum level right now. I didn't want to add extra water because I thought I should keep everything the same while shocking. Will post full set of results in the morning. Thanks for your help.

We used the 10 mark each time. When I tested my FC after shocking, the first time after adding the dippers my water was still clear, and then when I took another sample right after, added the dippers, the water would turn pink. Is it possible that some granules could react better than others? The pool place said that if the FC is too high it can bleach the sample so much that the reagent is not working, or something like that. Anyways, I hope that I get a pass for the overnight test so I can get back on track with other readings.

At higher levels of FC, you need to use an extra scoop of powder. If the color flashes pink and then goes clear, that means that to FC is high and you need to add more powder.
