We recently drained 2/3 of our pool (had CYA greater than 100) and filled again two days ago. 20,000 gallon vinyl lined pool. Here were the readings right after filling :
Chlorine-0
pH- 7.6
TA-100
CYA- <30(can’t know for sure with testing kit could still see black dot when filled to top)

we added 4 lbs cal hypo shock and 4 lbs granule chlorine and pool still looked awful with readings now of
FC- 1.4
CC-3.8
pH- 7.6
TA-100
CYA- <30

After plenty of reading is it correct we need to get to a “breaking point” and get chlorine level to basically 30+ppm to get this pool clear and have adequate chlorine readings?! Where do we go from here. after battling this pool for a month we need some help please!

Breakpoint chlorination is a technique that has been basically tossed out because it doesn't work. As casey asked, what test kit are you using?

What you need to do is to read and follow the SLAM Process process to it's completion. No more Cal Hypo, no mor granular chlorine. Stick to liquid chlorine after you get the CYA to 30. But, the granular chlorine is probably Dichlor which is almost half CYA.

Your goal is to get CYA to 30 and Chlorine to 12 to SLAM. Then you need to keep FC at 12 until your

  • Water is crystal clear
Your Combined Chlorine is less than 0.5 ppm
You pass the Overnight Chlorine Test
To do all this, you will need a proper test kit. K2006C or TF-100

If you spend some time reviewing Pool School (see link top of page) it will be a big help to you.

Thanks all. I am using the Taylor 2006-c. So first step I should add stabilizer to get cya up and then follow with liquid chlorine through slam?
CYA to 30
pH to 7.2
SLAM Process away

The key parv to the SLAM Process is the "maintain". You need to maintain 12 FC (if your CYA is 30) as constantly as possible. Test the water and adjust it back up to 12 as many times a day as you can. The minimum is 3 times a day, but the more often you do it the quicker the SLAM Process will be completed.

At least once a day you need to brush the pool. Algae attached to surfaces can develop a biofilm over it that protects it from chlorine. Brushing breaks up the biofilm.

We may only have access to bleach as the only “pool store” doesn’t carry much product so I just looked up a calculator showing using bleach 6% requires us to add 456 oz to get to 12ppm! Does this sound realistic? We will need to buy so many jugs then especially if we have to get to that point and maintain! Can you SLAM with granules?

Can you SLAM with granules?
No They are too slow to dissolve and react and most granules add more CYA

Check around, the following places usually have 10% liquid in their seasonal pool areas

Lowes
Home Depot
Menards
WalMart
Ace Hardware

Many times you can find it available at cleaning/industrial supply houses as pressure washers and cleaning folks use the high % stuff also.

You could give a place like this a call and ask where they get their liquid chlorine from

JH Cleaning Services

Ask for Herb, I hear he has bee around sense 1994 (OK, it's on their web site)

Yes, that's about right. That's about 4 gallons. Buy maybe 10-12 gallons. Look for fresh bottles. There's a way to tell "born" date based on the date stamped on the bottle. Do a search on the site for that. I don't have the info at my fingertips because I have a Salt Water Generator so I don't buy liquid chlorine very often. Note that you may need more than 10-12 gallons to complete the SLAM.

Buy just plain bleach, not scented, not easy-pour, not splashless, not Chlormax.

Theoretically, you can use granules to SLAM, but I strongly suggest you don't try. It's very risky for someone new to TFP. All granules will add something to the water besides liquid chlorine. Cal-Hypo adds Calcium. You don't say what your Calcium level is, but you can quickly go too high. Other kinds of granules will add CYA, and then you'd be back in the situation where you were where you have to partially drain your pool. You can keep your granules for another time when you know what's in your granules and you know what your pool needs. Then, if those two things line up, you can use them.

If you have any dairy farms close by, you may want to check with them and see who their supplier is for chlorine/bleach sanitizer.

Thanks! We found the higher concentration! We just added the stAbilizer, will it be ok to add the 12% chlorine tonight yet or do I need to wait?
No, once the stabilizer is in just assume you reached your target (you did measure, right?) adjust pH down to 7.2 and SLAM Process.

Adjusting the pH is important - once the FC goes above 10 the pH test is not valid and you won't be able to adjust again until the end.

We are about 24 hrs into SLAM process. Do we need to keep at 12ppm or higher until pool is clear? We are seeing slight improvement but not much so far! (I know it can be a long process) I have been adding the liquid chlorine as we go and have it at 12ppm right now. I just want to make sure I understand. Thanks!

Yes, as Debbie said keep it at 12. Test, add chlorine and repeat is what you are dong now.
