I have been having trouble with my sand filter. Seeing a lot of dirt in the pool. I opened the filter to do a deep clean and noticed it was less than half full of sand. Rubbed some of the dirt that was on my steps and it was sand. So pretty sure I have a broken lateral. Also when I moved in 3 years ago there were several bags of play sand in the shed. So it just hit me that the previous owner used play sand in the filter. Have a feeling this is the root of my filter problems.

You are spot on with that thinking! Good find..................now take that sand out and put REAL pool sand in. Look up your filter model if you don't have the manual and see how much sand it really needs.
