Well, now that ice is thawing I’m noticing pieces of plaster and a few spots where it looks like chunks. About 3 to 5 inches long by 2 to 3 inches wide and looks to be 1/2 to 1/4 deep on a tile line. Also noticed a decent chunk on top step just below sunning deck. Sunning deck basically entirely froze. It’s only about 6” deep when full.
It seems to be most of the damage is mostly around the water/tile line. But again won’t fully know until all these icebergs melt.

a few other questions. Should I start everything up once fully thawed? Have a pool inspection first?

That is spalling of the plaster due to the ice freezing on it. You should still have a layer of plaster waterproofing the gunite. It is cosmetic as long as the pool does not leak.

Do a visual inspection of all the pipes and valves and equipment you can see for cracks. If it all looks good and you know your valve settings then start the pool up and watch for any leakage. If you are not confident then get someone to help you.
