No need to put anything down in PoolMath.
If 8.0 or higher, add enough muriatic acid to lower the pH by 0.4
Retest in 30 minutes, if still 8.0 or higher, add enough acid to lower it another 0.4
Rinse, repeat.
Once in the 7's, record the pH reading in PoolMath.

Use Affects of Adding in PoolMath to calculate the muriatic acid dose to lower pH by 0.4
You need a valid TA reading to do that calculation.

Hold the comparator block in front of something white - white paper, white computer screen, etc - to get a more accurate reading.

A consistent background is key. To get a consistent backlit background, hold the block in front of your computer monitor with a blank white screen displayed (I use Google's homepage). Also, try holding the block sideways or upside down. Sometimes that helps distinguish colors better. I also use two old hotel keycards to mask off areas and narrow down my decision.
