Persistent Algae Spots

I shouldn’t increase my cya once the slam is over? The recommended level for a swg is 70-80. I get leaving it low while I’m using bleach for the slam. I won’t raise it until I get a successful ONLT and end the slam.
I wouldn’t raise it for a while until you’re sure whatever is eating your chlorine is gone. CYA of 80 for a SWCG isn’t a magic number you have to hit. It’s just the recommended maximum for CYA because it tends to help chlorine last a bit longer in really sunny hot times of the year. You can run your pool just fine at 40ppm CYA just fine and experiment with higher CYA if you want to. It’s not like pH where if it gets too far out of range bad stuff happens.

+1. With short days and a lower sun angle, CYA isn't nearly as critical this time of year.

Might be a glimmer of hope now. Believe I must have removed something living in the filter housing after doing a more detailed clean. Only had a 2ppm loss FC overnight. Getting closer. Lessons learned and a word of advice to other members struggling with this. Don’t half Rear your cleaning during a slam. Example, just hose off equipment and or accessories that are in the pool, and expect that’s good enough. It’s not! Take your time and do a very detailed clean. Take a brush to every surface and scrub it. Even if you don’t see any visible algae. I’m living proof that the three to four hours spent doing a detailed cleaning of the de filter yesterday is paying off. Previous I just rinsed the filter panels off. Didn’t see anything on them and assumed it was clean. This time I broke it all down and scrubbed every component and both sides of every filter panel. Recommend using a soft brush on those to not cause damage. Results were a reduction in FC on my ONLT. From a consistent 6ppm drop down to 2ppm. Not done yet but a move in the right direction.

Guess I’ll just wait and see how long before the algae spots come back and try again in the future.
You can keep the SLAM going.........test and refill twice daily. Be diligent and that will work.

Always keep in mind that algae represents inadequate chlorine in your pool......period. Raise chlorine back to SLAM level and keep brushing vacuuming and doing ALL the things the SLAM spells out. Don't shortcut, don't be inconsistent.

Try OCLT in another day or so but keep SLAMming until you pass. Then, keep chlorine adequate from there on out.

Sorry to be a pessimist, but, unless you change something you are going to get algae again in a few weeks.

Have you thought of what you should be doing differently from this point?
From the start of this thread I came to the early conclusion that I had not been doing the slam the right way. Hence the reason algae spots would return after a couple weeks. Pool has always been clear and balanced properly. Just goes to show how persistent algae is. So I started the slam again the proper way. Took almost three weeks and cleaned everything, so I thought. I believe this could but have been shorter slam and less frustrating had I not skimmed out on the cleaning of the filter. As soon a I did a more detailed clean I had an immediate improvement in my ONLT.

I think he’s saying that the algae coming back frequently may be more likely to be caused by inadequate chlorination when the SLAM is not being done.
