Pentair IntelliCom II Adapter is required with Intellitouch ?

Hi

I am considering to upgrade my Pentair whisperflo pump which is controlled by an intellitouch i9 +3 to a Pentair IntelliFlo VS Variable Speed Pool Pump.

My pool guy said I need the IntelliCom II adapter. Is this really required ? I am pretty confused about the need as I thought that it would be only necessary when managing a third party pool controller .

What features would the adapter support ? or provide to me ? I understand that the Intellitouch has a specific hardware firmware version , how do i find out what that is ?

443,

Unless your IntelliTouch is very old, the only thing you need is the IntelliFlo pump.. the pump comes with a data cable that plugs into the side of the pump and then connects to the com port on the IntelliTouch. The pump is controlled by the Com port..

If I understand correctly, the first versions of the IntelliTouch have issues with the controlling the IntelliFlo.

I'll seen it before, but somewhere on this site is a thread that talks about the required hardware/FW.. I'll see if I can locate it... I also can use a "call a friend" button that might work.

If I had the choice of using the IntelliCom, or buying a new card to upgrade my IntelliTouch, the new card would win every time...

You should be able to look at the main board in your IntelliTouch and there should be a label with the F/W version. The label should look like the one on the EasyTouch card in the following pic..

Thanks,

If you can't find the label with your firmware version, you can get the firmware version from your indoor controller:

1. Select Menu > Setup > Advanced.
2. on the bottom row of buttons, hit button 2 and 4 at the same time (this would be the button to the right of Menu, AND the last button on the Right).
3. you should see a new set of options, choose "System Version Info" (the top one). **if you get kicked back to the main screen, retry from step 1 (the thing is finicky if you don't hit buttons 2 and 4 exactly right)

Good luck! and let us know what version you see,

Tom

I forgot to add... I would not buy that adapter just to operate your pump. It would be a lot easier to update your firmware (if it's even necessary).

Most pool shops that sell Pentair can do this for a fee, there are some folks on the forum that do it for less, or you can do it yourself with the hardware/software from this thread:

How to perform firmware upgrade on Pentair* controllers

Thanks Jim and thanks Tom

The Firmware version is 1.060 for both the Indoor control and Outdoor control.

I presume as in Jims linked article version 1.090 is needed for the Intelliflow support.

Does anyone know any Pentair specialists that could upgrade the firmware in the Brentwood CA area ?

Ok, yeah so you'll need an update. You'll want to update both the indoor and outdoor units to the latest which is 1.180

If you download the latest intellitouch firmware from pentair's website, there's a "master readme.rtf" file that describes the changes made in the different firmware revisions. I'll send it to you in a pm - if I can figure out how ;)

Jim is always thinking... he wanted to make sure the intellitouch 1.060 could even be upgraded, and it can...

My own pool (with intelliflo pump) is running a board that I updated from 1.050 to 1.180. Before the update I had to wipe the outdoor board, per the instructions in the readme... my indoor controller was already at 1.180 so after the outdoor unit was updated it just copied the programming back from my indoor unit.

The important thing about the indoor/outdoor controllers is they each store a complete copy of the programming - if one gets reset it just copies the programming from the other.

Here's the excerpt from the "master readme.pdf" about updating from versions 1.070 and earlier (it basically tells you to update/reset the indoor panel, let it copy the program from the outdoor, then clear the outdoor and update that, letting it copy the program back from the indoor controller):

Updating IntelliTouch to version 1.070 or Greater
An issue can/may occur when updating an IntelliTouch system with a
Firmware version older/less than 1.070 to version 1.070 or newer.

In the example we will assume a standard system with one indoor panel and one outdoor panel.

1) Update the firmware on the indoor panel to the current version 1.070 (or newer).
2) Erase the memory on the indoor panel.
a. Press “Menu”
b. Press “Setup”
c. Press “Advanced”
d. Press the 2nd and 4th bottom buttons at the same time to enter the hidden service
screen.
e. Press “Erase EEprom – All !!” and follow prompts pressing “Yes” and then “Erase”
3) Allow the unit to recover the system settings from the outdoor panel. This will take a minute or so.
4) Update the firmware on the outdoor panel to the current version 1.070 (or newer).
5) Erase the memory on the outdoor panel.
a. Press “Reset” – the 3 LEDs on the left showing system mode will all light at the same time.
b. Wait a second or two and then press the AUX 5 button.
c. The 3 LEDs will flash off and then back on indicating the erase took place.
6) Insure the memory retrieval occurs again by looking at the indoor panel, passing the data again.
This should ensure a clean update.
- If you have multiple indoor panels, simply follow steps 1, 2 and 3 for each panel.
- Expansion load/power centers do not require any updating
