I have a sand filter. The water is nicely balanced and clear but at night when I look in front of the light, there is a lot of particulate matter just floating around. Would adding some DE to my sand filter after each backwash help to remove this particulate or is this something I will just have to deal with.

Thanks

De will help, sand filters are very easy but they do not capture as much a cart and DE filters but a sand filter is the only one you can add DE to besides a DE filter.. :)

I read elsewhere that I need to add it (DE about 1-2 cups) after each time I backwash. Is this the same recommendation that you would provide. I've learned the TFP often has better advice than other places on the internet.

Your filter is not going to help with stuff floating on the water unless it makes its way into the filter. Anything you can see will be filtered by sand, DE or a cartridge almost equally as they all filter to the micron level. It is probably pollen and not being sucked down your skimmers because it floats. I have the same issue with mine. I bought a very fine mesh attachment for my brush pole and manually skim it off the surface.

The particulate I'm referring to isn't just floating on the top like pollen. It's more homogenous than that but I can only see it at night when the pool light is on.
