How did the excavation go?

They are still at it today. I will post some pics once they are done, hopefully today.

Excavation complete. Here are some pictures. Plumbing scheduled for Monday.

Plumbing and steel is done but I had some questions regarding the finished steel. I feel that the ends extend too far and the shotcrete may not fully cover them when complete. Please take a look at the pictures and tell me if that is normal for the rebar to stick out that close to the boards. Do I need to have them come back and cut the ends back?

I don't know what is normal for the rebar, but most of my rebar was cut pretty close to flush with the outside bar of the bond beam. I had a few that stuck out about an inch past that, but they were not too close to the form.

The rebar guy came back out and trimmed back some of the ones that were sticking out too close to the forms.

Since I last posted electric and gas has been ran. The city has inspected and passed pre-gunite and gas lines/connections.

The gas company is coming this week to upgrade my meter. Now I am just waiting for shotcrete. I am scheduled for June 6 with hopes that something opens up sooner.

Any advice regarding tile selection and purchase? No one wants to meet and give bids until shotcrete is done but I would like to look at tile and purchase before hand. Has any one had luck with shopping for tile and interrior finishes in the valley without a contractor? I read through the post that most recommend NPT and Noble Tile, are there any other places and do they allow you to shop without a contractor? I would like to shop for material so I already know what I want once I start getting bids.

We looked at NPT without our contractor present. I was actually surprised at the amount of help we received from NPT staff. You will not get prices from them (as most contractors have a markup), but they will tell you if something is in stock.

I believe Noble and MSI are the same way, but could shoot them a quick call.

Yeah, MSI is the same way. You can check out the showroom and get samples, but no pricing.

I went to NPT and Noble a couple of times to look. I also scoured online sites. I decided on our main waterline tile from Noble. I ordered our step tile from online and had it for our tile guys. I ordered our spa tile from a company in Phoenix for a significant savings. They didn’t have a showroom, they seemed to be a go between. It took longer to get in and we needed it. I actually met her husband in Tempe at his work and picked it up. Very unconventional but it worked. Our tile installer company bought the tile and our spa coping from Noble for us. They charged us cost. Go look. I wanted to decide on my own terms. I didn’t want to go decide with someone else. Order samples from some online sites and take your time deciding. Friends of ours aLeo did o/b but she didn’t do any planning. She just went with the tile company to decide and she felt pressured to get something that day and she doesn’t like how it turned out. Do your research beforehand to avoid that.

@srivas I am going to second Niki's suggestion of the online tile place for the step trim tile. Order samples of stuff that you think you like, because they are so much prettier in person than in the photos.
