Our Pool Is Making Us Cough

20 ppm CYA probably won't show up in the test well enough to get a useful reading. That's why the minimum tends to be 30, but 20 is fine for your situation.

You can rely on the weight you put in. It should have been a powder and said 99.(something)% cyanuric acid on the bag. If you know that quantity and you're confident about your pool volume, then you can rely on the PoolMath number. If you see cloudiness (very faint), then the CYA is in there, at the calculated amount. Your number will degrade very slowly unless you have a lot of splashout (or a leak) and refilling.

Was it granular CYA? Added in a sock? CYA should show up on the test 24 hours after it is dissolved from the sock.

I used the "chlorine stabilizer" that Kim pointed me to on Amazon early on in this post. It is granular. I added it via a sock. It took forever to dissolve out of the sock, even with me squeezing it every few hours.

Unfortunately I forgot to weigh the container before adding, so the weight I added is approximate. I think it should have gotten me in the ballpark of 15-25ppm CYA. I'll try testing again in a few days, and will report back on how the tickle in the throat is next time we use the pool (haven't had a chance in ~5 days now).

We have found that as soon as the CYA is dissolved and the water had a chance to mix good the CYA should show on the test. (Guess who got to squeeze it all out of the socks at one time and test that afternoon?:rolleyes:LOL)

With your target being lower than 30 I would just look for cloudy but still seeing the dot and call it good.
