We did get quotes and decided we could not afford the pool we wanted if we had someone else construct it. The bids we had were smaller pools with only 3' of concrete. We were able to go with a larger pool, larger stamped pool deck, the block retaining wall and a large patio for what it would have cost for a pool company to install. Can't really give you any numbers or % saved since we are not comparing apples to apples. The laying it out and excavation were the most difficult parts of the job, especially since its an odd shaped pool with a deep end. My brother in law is still giving us trouble about not just going with a rectangular pool. The company we bought the pool kit from was always available to come out and give help or advice and would charge so much per hour. The only time we used them was to install the liner. We were scared when they came out and started inspecting the pool. Never doing this before, we weren't sure of the job we did. The pool guy was completely impressed and admitted that we did a better job than he would have done! The liner installation was a breeze. We probably didn't even need the pool company's help. In the end, we ended up with exactly what we wanted and the satisfaction that comes with the sweat equity put in.
