Hi, looking for some insight in getting rid of whatever is eating though my chlorine! This is my first full summer with the pool, we live in Houston where it is very hot and the pool is in full sun most of the day. The water temp is creeping up to 92 these days. I was pretty consistently using around 1 gallon of liquid chlorine/day to maintain 7ppm FC. A couple weeks ago I noticed that daily usage amount rising to 2/2.5 gallons per day. Is that a typical increase in the heat of the summer? (My pool is fairly large 39000 gallons.) I thought this could have been due to frequent use and high temperatures. I was out of town for the weekend and dumped extra chlorine that I thought should make it until we got back but I had 0 fc when we returned and 1ppm overnight loss. I started the SLAM with 24 hour filter running, raising my FC TO 24 each night and brushing daily. I cleaned out some visible algae in my Cyclone 50 pre filter cleaner but there is a small amount inside a seal I couldn’t easily access but I poured some bleach into the cyclone. I have been slamming for a few days and am using at least 5 gallons of liquid bleach each day! Last night’s overnight loss of 3ppm. I don’t see any visible algae in the pool.
Any recommendations of other things I could try to speed up the process? From what I have read in here powder shock or algaecide aren’t going to make a big difference. Do I need to take the cyclone apart all the way to get the little bit I can see in there, could that be the culprit? Do I need to clean my pump filters? Thank you for your help! Eating through this much chlorine everyday is killing me! 🙈

Welcome to TFP! Along with a full set of test results, we would need to start with:
- What test kit are you using?
- What type of pool/equipment do you have? Your signature is blank. :(

Remember, the SLAM Process works if you carefully follow that protocol. You might post some pics of your pool from different angles so we can see everything as well.

I have the TF-100 test kit and updated my equipment information.

Perfect! :goodjob: Let's see some test results please. You might also share a couple pics of the pool from different angles. Sometimes that give us more clues.

Oh, have you downloaded the PoolMath APP to log your testing? If so, remember there's a setting (toggle) that will allow you to share Poolmath logs back here to your TFP profile. You might find that easier at times.

Your CYA is 50. Always round up to the next 10. Your SLAM level target is 20.

Scrub everything, behind lights, in skimmers, remove weir doors and check for algae, remove ladders and scrub in the tubes.

Can you post a picture of the entire pool?

I was out of CYA reagent and my CYA was lower than I thought. I had been SLAMing to 24 ppm thinking I had CYA of 60 but it is closer to 42/45. My question now is should I just keep things where they are until I have no overnight loss and try to keep the FC at 20 as often as I can in the day? Or should I bring my CYA up to hopefully keep the chlorine from dissipating so quickly in the hot sun? Thank you for your help!!image.jpgimage.jpg

Keep the CYA at 50. Don't add more. Scrub in the autofill too! Do you have main drains? Take the covers off and scrub in there (pump off).

Continue to slam until you pass all three criteria.

I did see a few yellow algae spots in my pool today and scrubbed everywhere (besides the filter which I’ll try to do tomorrow.) I scrubbed but didn’t see anything in my returns or auto fill. Is it normal to be blowing through more than 5 gallons of chlorine/day to maintain the SLAM chlorine level? It’s taking a while and getting expensive. Any reason to try an algaecide or something like that?

5 gallons? One afternoon in a 30K pool (below). You have something lurking. Did you check the weir door foam? Check and scrub the feed to your waterfall. You need to be a super sleuth, inspect everything in the pool twice. You are also on day 3, so still early in the SLAM process.

I can't tell from pics. Do you have main drains? Remove the covers and scrub them and inside the drains (TURN THE PUMP OFF FIRST! and have a rescue person observe).
