I recently ordered a CircuPool SWG from DiscountSaltPool.com taking advantage of their $10 upgrade deal. The owner suggested I might want to install a pre-filter and I'm considering doing so.

I haven't found much information about them other than a few videos on YouTube demonstrating how they "spin" out dirt.

Looking for any positive or negative experiences. I currently have a DE filter so I would need to install a bypass for when I add DE.

thanks!

Cyclonic separation has been used for a long time in gas/solid separation processes. The size of the particle separated depends on the injection velocity of the fluid stream and the density differences between the fluid and particle. There’s is a specific “cut size” below which no separation will occur OR if the density of the fluid is close to the density of the particulate, then separation efficiency will be minimal.

So the question is - what are you trying to remove with the pre-filter? A skimmer sock and pump strainer basket will remove 99% of the macroscopic debris entering the plumbing system? Your DE filter will remove everything else down to 5 microns. What’s the point of adding the cyclonic separator between those two? Maybe catch a little sand that got by the pump? I doubt it’s going to have any real world impact on your plumbing except to be one more thing that leaks or needs maintenance. It’s certainly going to set your wallet back a significant chunk ...
