opening pool for first time

I have two skimmers and a drain on the deep end of the bottom of the pool. I have two holes in my skimmers and I am finding conflicting info online on whether I need to open both. The hole closest to the pool has a square indent in the plug so I would have to find a tool to unscrew it, if I should open it. I already unplugged the other one. How do you determine if you need to open the 2nd plug?

The square head plug is sealed for a reason. Either the main drain line was abandoned due to leaking, or nothing was ever connected there in the first place.

it may also tie into the plumbing somewhere else.

Got pics of the equipment pad ?

So the 3 valves before the pump.......

skimmer, skimmer, drain ?

Something else ?

Dunno ?

Ok so the plug in the skimmer is from the original install and the 2nd hole was never used. Leave it plugged and proceed with the rest of opening. (y)
