3-4ppm drop when you have elevated SLAM levels of chlorine could easily be explained by exposure to the sun. The overnight drop is what you really want to check to make sure nothing is being used for the chlorine except the sun during the day.
Thanks guys, I think I'm getting close and I do think that most of the chlorine loss now is due to the sun. If I test at dusk and then the next am, there's very minimal difference. So I think it's pretty much UV loss now. Just need that filter to finish getting it cleared up. I was going to look at adding some DE media to the skimmer as mentioned in other posts I've read here. Pool store only sold a huge bag of it though. Where can you purchase this in smaller quantities?
The sand will eventually clear it but you have been quite patient. I think the correct dose of DE (look for a 1# psi rise) will make it crystal clear in 24 hours.
Pretty confident. I did it on my Taylor kit and had a reading in the 30 range. My wife took a sample to pool store just for fun to compare numbers to the Taylor kit and it also showed 30. Last year it was very high and I had to dump a lot of water to get the CYA numbers into a reasonable range.
