Hello all,
I have an old inground pool that the previous owners had built around 35 years ago or so. It's an Anthony pool (which I understand was a fairly popular build in the New York area). I actually have a fair number of questions and issues, and I'm going to try to post each issue in a separate post, but there may be some overlap, and I apologize in advance if there's not enough or too much information.
The pool has one skimmer and one main drain, although it appears as the main drain is not actually connected. I cannot feel any suction there, and an old plan that I found looks like the pipe running from the drain to the skimmer has a line drawn through it.
There is an old Kreepy Krauly that they left us. I replaced the pad on the bottom and the arms last year. The tubing is a sectioned hose. There is a clear skimmer plate that has two positions, one for vacuum and one for normal operation. When I attach the tubing for the Kreepy Krauly and the plate is in the vacuum position, there is a vertical plastic piece that covers the inlet hole from the (non functional) main drain. Generally the Kreepy Krauly works well, but often the tubing at the plate collapses, and a lot of air gets into the pump. There is what appears to be a regulator that attaches to the tubing, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to attach or use it, but I was thinking that decreasing the suction force might help with this problem. I was hoping it might also allow me to use the skimmer and Kreepy at the same time.
So, with all this in mind, my main questions are:
1. What's the deal with the unconnected main drain?
2. How can I prevent the collapsing suction tubing?
3. If I need to replace the tubing, do I go with segmented or one long piece?
4. Is there such a thing as a reinforced tubing?
5. How do I use the regulator, abd do I need it?
Thanks again, abd sorry for the long post.

I got the main drain!

-It might have started leaking. If you can dive down and take the cover off you might see that it plugged or close off in some way. What happens if you plug the hole in the skimmer forcing all of the suction to come from the main drain?

I got the tubing as well.

-You can replace with the long piece. The segmented is easier to store and replace if/when a piece goes bad.
-The tubing I got from Walmart seems to be thicker and more ridged than the segmented hose.

Regulator-share a pic so we can make sure we know what you are dealing with.

How would I plug the skimmer? There's a hole in the back that goes to the pump, one in the front to the main drain, and the skimmer entrance itself (the flap). If I obstruct the skimmer entrance I end up sucking in air.
As far as the regulator goes I'll post when I get home from work in the morning.

Hi. Sorry for the delay in response.
First off, I'm attaching a link to pictures of the regulator that I mentioned. For some reason I keep getting an error message that I'm over my quota no matter how much I reduce the file size.https://photos.app.goo.gl/d6pKVDJRkZXjMvK23
As far as the tubing that you mentioned, do you know which specific one?
Why would the pool have been built with a main drain that wasn't plumbed? How necessary is a main drain - is it worth plumbing it in or is the nonfunctional drain just an annoyance that I have to live with?
Finally, I saw this item which looks like it may help. Any thoughts or experience? https://www.amazon.com/Pentair-R211100-Vac-Mate-Cleaner-Dispenser/dp/B004MCH1SG/ref=sr_1_1/134-3194649-4390111?ie=UTF8&qid=1500053064&sr=8-1&keywords=pentair+vac-mate
Thanks again
