Old "Anthony" Style Skimmer main drain question

Now this is just a thought but was curious on feedback. When winterizing Old Anthony skimmers I use the double plug. Closing with the double plug is a big gamble in hoping that the air lock holds for the main drain while making sure skimmer is blown out/antifreeze is in skimmer.

In the event of a freeze, wouldn't the ice force through the main drain and eventually just push water back through the drain? Random thought and not sure about ice formation etc. but love to hear others thoughts?

I'm just not convinced on this airlock method with the double plugs

Ignoring the double plug solution....

Do you have a diverter valve on the skimmer line before the pump?

If so, why not lower the water below the skimmer, blow out the skimmer, from the pump, for some number of minutes (5-10) to clear the skimmer line, then turn off the diverter valve to airlock the skimmer line. Then using a blowthrough valve in the skimmer to airlock the main drain?
