no free chlorine

I have a small 12 foot intex and my tests have been spot on and my pool is crystal clear. My aunt has a large inground that she's had for 37 years. She uses the chlorine pucks and "shocks" her pool every 10 days, and swears I'm doing it all wrong for not shocking mine. I've tried to explain, but it's like hitting my head against a brick wall. I decided to use my Taylor test kit to test her water (my 5 year old and I swim in her pool too since she lives a few houses from me)

Her FC is 0. I could never get it to turn pink and stopped testing after 6 scoops bc I didn't want to waste my reagent. I dumped that water and did another sample using the 2 scoops and then the reagent to test CC and that did turn light pink. So no FC, but a little CC. Her pool is not as sparkly as mine, but it's not too cloudy either. I could easily see her robot moving around the deep end, which I think is either 10 or 13 feet deep. Oh, CYA is unreadable as my test stops at 100. The dot is not visible at all at 100. Tested outside in bright sun.

Question is, how can you use pucks and 'shock' every 10 days and not have free chlorine? Is her CYA (from using the pucks from my reading on here) just so high that the chlorine can't be used? I'm trying to understand and also see if her pool is sanitized. Her Ph was light yellow which also doesn't register on my Taylor test, so I'm guess really low. thanks

It is possible that the FC is over 50 ppm. I've been told that if it gets high enough, it can bleach out the ability for the powder to 'read'. Try collecting a 5ml sample then add enough plain water to bring it up to 25ml then try a scoop of the powder if you want to try that.
